Asymmetric Tyres

The last exam  I did I answered a question correctly on this but it was wrong  for the changes and the exam question s agreed at the time

An asymmetric tyre fitted the wrong way isn’t a safety issue, that’s the point.

It’s a common question in this years assessment too by the way.

Why have a inside and outside marking s then ?

Because the outer has a stiffer shoulder due to tread block design, this gives improved feel/feedback in cornering.

If we started enforcing performance issues we’d have to remove the majority of budget tyres from the market.

A directional tyre fitted the wrong way, however, is a significant safety issue due to the tendency for aqua planning.

Maybe it's a decision made based on feedback from an appeal whereby some garage got a visit and DVSA took action!

Some years ago springs were a problem and some garage got a DVSA visit and reported for passing spring ends broken on suspension systems. On appeal DVSA said they gave a really good defence and reasonsing to not failing them, so DVSA then came to the rest of us and asked for feedback, and until the evidence went in we were all passing and advising broken springs until the decision was back pedalled. Do you remember!

Any competent tyre fitter should know the product they are selling and fitting and should be aware of sidewall instructions and by looking at the tread pattern design should know if they have sidewall instructions

Our local tyre fitters always ask which side of the vehicle the tyres are for if they are directional!

We could over think all this to be honest. How many tyres in your experience have you failed for being fitted the wrong way round, directional or otherwise?

Ask yourself, how long had that tyre been fitted incorrectly and how many miles had that vehicle covered since fitted!

How many accidents are recorded due to tyres incorrectly fitted?

Have you ever driven a vehicle in bad weather, serious rain fall or floods, and if so did you ever experince a problem with tyres?

Maybe making a mountain out of a mole hill might not be a good idea!
