I have been contacted by someone who is currently converting a five tonne truck into a motorhome , they are half way through the convesion and it needs testing, it still has the roller door on the rear of which they do not want to remove just yet as they are working from the front to back converting as they go .

My question is what category does this vehicle come under, is it still an HGV or a class 4 ? They have tried two test stations who refused to test it as it`s only partially converted and is neather an HGV or a motorhome, they have not applied to DVLA to change the class of vehicle as they are not sure if they can yet as the conversion is not complete therefore it`s not a motorhome.

Can anyone shed any light as to what test this vehicle requires as the people seem to be going around in circles with the DVLA help line and getting nowhere.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'd wait until the conversion is finished, and then I'd look at the size and weight and ask, which test station is actually equipped to test it? As a motorhome it more than likely will be tested as a class 4 irrespective of its weight, but the test station must have test equipment big enough to test it. That's my take on it.

You can't "unbreak" the broken,you can only break the unbroken to break the break of the unbroken, for me, you cannot unbreak me, for I am already broken,so you have no need to break the break because I am not unbroken.

We're lucky,ramp is 3.5 tonne, and door is just short of 8ft.
Sorry mate can't get it in for testing.
Boss booked a motorhome in years ago, he tried to drive it in!?
TV aerial was first, but the skylight stopped him getting in.
Cost him a fortune for the repairs .

That way they probably think well its safe at least?

you test whats in front of you not the logbook or the classes in it.it needs(as a minimum)the stuff required for someone to live in it,loo,cooker,washing/sleeping facilities and NO load area cos if it has its still hgv same as a horsebox and the like capable of carrying goods/burden etc + living facilities.if it aint meeting those specs then its a goods vehicle and tested according to weight,in this
case hgv test.all campers(yup even 20 ton yank winnebagos and the like)are class 4.if it meets the camper specs then its a camper and if it dont its an hgv.not complicated now is it?getting test facilities itll fit on?probably gonna be more grief than the test.have mates with the likes of the above mentioned winnebago.class 4 test but has to be done on hgv/ministry style facilities with all the fook you for a free retest + rebooking hassles that entails.expensive way of being homeless......

The problem they are having is the test station is asking for the fee before they will tell them if they will test it, they are saying that if they refuse to test it the fee is not refundable. this doesn`t seem right to me, surely they should be able to decide if they are going to test it or not.
Thoughts ?
