Aye, iv bought a none running Passat to fix up and sell just as a wee hobby

Looking for some help, here is what I’ve done

It was over heating and the oil light was staying on, and it blew the head gasket, so I done the head gasket, it also needed a turbo the lack of oil had ruined the bearings !! Any way got it all back together and got it running, but the issue I am having is it won’t run if the crank shaft sensor is connected!!, when I unplug it the car cranks for a bit and then starts .

I scoped the crank sensor and I am getting a signal but I don’t know if it a good waveform, if I send you the waveform would you be able to get a know good waveform? I don’t want to swap the sensor if not needed cause I have read you need to get the gear box out to get to it

It a 2008 Passat TDI with the BMR engine

vicar what test equipment do you have to check fault codes and live data? VCDS, scanner etc?

The crankshaft sensor can be changed without removing the gearbox. You need a long reach round headed allen key (snap on preferably). Remove the oil filter housing assembly to gain access. You must be very careful to guide the allen key into the crankshaft sensor bolt head at the correct (angle) otherwise you will damage the bolt head and then yes you will need to remove the gearbox. Once the allen key is loosened the bolt will remain in the crankshaft sensor and you simply pull it out at an angle. Live data on a good scanner or VCDS will show whether the crankshaft sensor is working or not, although at the moment it sounds like you have a trapped wire shorting.

You can't "unbreak" the broken,you can only break the unbroken to break the break of the unbroken, for me, you cannot unbreak me, for I am already broken,so you have no need to break the break because I am not unbroken.

If it starts whilst the crank sensor is disconnected then the ecu must be using the cam sensor.
Also, the ecu must be seeing the crank sensor when it is connected but not liking what it is seeing for example cam timing out.

Have they checked the timing using VCDS, the locking tools can only really be relied upon so that you don’t do damage the engine when restarting after a belt change,
They may find that it is just could be that the timing is out .

I have seen folks fit belts on these without using the crank tool.visually(assuming its the one I remember) it looks like the normal notch in housing and pulley sorta job but with the tool inserted it turns out to be about a tooth out at the crank with those marks,seem to recall 2 different tools depending on year/spec as well.bit unusal for a crank sensor to just snuff it for no reason or with no previous probs but hey it coulda got cooked at the same time as the head I suppose.as above check the basics first,timing/damaged wires etc.anything except that fooking sensor cos I will guarantee its either seized or butchered by a previous attempt at removal and hey ho boxy offy.
