VE's are around. We had our regular site inspection today. By regular I mean the one every four years (the last was 13th February 2015).

You'll all be pleased to know there weren't 20 questions. The main things concentrating on were:-

New manual items and test procedures, including a demo test

Annual training records and logs

Quality controls, including any provision made with other local VTS's for quality controllers themselves and single tester sites

Calibrations, not forgetting the "Tapley" and the tyre depth gauge

Displaying the "Is your diesel vehicle having a MOT" poster link here

It was also far quicker than any previous visits at just over two hours. Not sure if that's because it was a new VE for us or if there is actually less for them to do. It'll be interesting to see how quickly it's entered onto the system.

We’ve had two in the last few weeks (completely different areas).

Both retested vehicles
Even though we have a thorough internal QC procedure, it looks like we’re ever going to be vilified unless we pay a third party to QC 40+ testers bi monthly.
We were questioned why we’d left the CPD training and assessments so late.
No paperwork was left on site, MOT testing service updated within a week for both sites.

Doubtless it will help us show that those displaying their ‘blame-clarifying disclaimer’ are somewhat on the ball. I for one must have missed the instruction/message/special notice advising of the necessity to display. Perhaps it was in the ‘updates’ somewhere?

It helps to show the customer that if the engine goes ‘bang’ the VTS is to blame, not the ‘Agency who instruct those garages HOW to test, and not the customer who will be first to point the finger.

If I displayed my own version, what would they do? Hit me with 500 big-ones. I doubt it.

Here’s what it says........

‘Is Your Diesel Vehicle Having an MoT?
The tester will ask you about your vehicle’s service history- for example if the timing belt has been replaced recently.
This is to check that the emissions test won’t damage the engine.
The MoT won’t go ahead if the tester thinks it could damage the engine’

I prefer something along the lines of..........

Is Your Diesel Vehicle Having an MoT?
Please tell us if there are shortcomings or doubts about the vehicle’s service history-for example do you know if the timing belt has been replaced recently?
If you are not sure, you may prefer to instruct us not to proceed so that the emissions test won’t damage the engine*

*N.B. The DVSA instruct test stations to rev the engine to its maximum limit (governor speed) as part of the test.

I'm another one thanking @baz657 for the heads up about that poster!
But I don't believe I've ever seen or heard of it before, and looking at the posts above it seems as though others have missed it as well.
Was it in a special notice because I like to think I'm normally quite on top of them?

The VE said it was in a Special Notice. I've not checked so it might be a bit of VE BS (it's a well known phenomenon) but as it was written on my VT59 if I can save a few members that embarrassment so be it.

I originally put this in the members only area but made it available to the public now. There might be other VTS's that can benefit who aren't currently members.

The Current Testing guide states that VT9 and VT9A must be displayed. I can Find nothing in SNs to state that anything additional is required.
Also from the Testing Guide...
H3 Leaflets and Customer Information
1. Customer information and leaflets are available in electronic format and may be viewed
online and printed. There is no requirement for AEs to stock or distribute this information.

I would prefer summat along the lines of"due to government policies the diesel you were incentivised to buy a decade ago is now considered polluting and said gvmnt now want it off the road but don't want to pay any compensation etc to you.as they don't want the hassle the job has been given to us.this means your vehicle will probably have to meet a smoke limit it never has before and as a result its likely to be revved further and more often that it ever has been.you may wish to consider servicing it this decade or changing the overdue cambelt first before we proceed or perhaps buying a more low emission vehicle as said policy hopes you to"or do you think this unneccesarily cynical?

its the sheer pointlessness and hypocrisy of the entire affair that annoys me,those of you that remember the smoke test coming in,the resultant blow ups and the ministry"minor procedural changes"followed by em saying poke it for them paying for any more engines but us still having to.add that to the fact that gvmnt policy led to so many diesels being sold in the first place that we are now expected to get off the road for em (cos any political party admitting whats happening is immediately getting voted out)and I start getting narky.character flaw I suppose.....

ours have included a couple of psa units taking off(inter coolers fulla old oil from turbine blow by)a Mondeo eating its own pi$$flaps(tho strangely it didn't die till after being switched off at which point it never ran again)astra diesel fuel pump sh1tting itself,another astra belt snapping,plus a few others.luckily enuff we didn't get lumbered with the bill for most of em but plenty of folks have.the original test had slightly higher limits along with getting revved up to 10 times,when engines started sh1tting emselves the ministry suspended smoke testing then reinstated it with revving 6 times max.cant see a lotta difference tween revving x6,fail,then revving x6 for retest but hey?both my most recent spotchecks have been diesels that the ves concerned seemed unwilling to re conduct emissions tests on(and one had failed)so why are we allowed to test/breath all this sh1te when they clearly do everything they can to avoid doing the same?
