I've never seen this before. We just bought a Micra as a customer loan car and it's tested until September, which is fine. But the invoice for the last test was still in the car.
MOT test at £37. OK, they discount. I don't agree with it but not my business. But then there is another item "MOT administration charge at £6.37 + VAT".
The garage is well out of my area so I'm not going to go and look but what's the betting they have a sign outside saying "MOT tests £37" when they're actually charging £44.64?
Is that legal, is it one for DVSA or is it one for Trading Standards?
I'm not bothered but just wondered if this was common.

Are they a VTS, or do they sub out tests to a neighbour we got one nearby does the same trick. They don't do tests but charge the customer for taking their cars to and from test which they can add vat on. Trading standards paid a couple of visits but we heard nothin more.

God made me do it.

If a vat registered garage which does not test takes a car for a test they have to charge vat on the difference between the buying price and the selling price. This has to be listed separately.

I would think the £37 was the trade price.

DVSA will have no interest, they would direct you to Trading standards or the ASA, It is not permitted for a business that does not have a VTS to display the three triangle authorised testing station logo or for them to pass themselves off as a vehicle testing station in their advertising literature.
There is a tort law of passing off that can be used in certain situations.
The advertising/promotion of the services they provide must make clear the terms of service they offer.
unfortunately this problem is quite common and is expensive to pursue through the courts, I know.

After all, it wasn't me that got charged! I'll have a look to see if they are a testing station though. Thanks to those who pointed that out, I hadn't thought of it that way.

It looks like those who suggested it was a charge to take the car for a test were right. Although this place advertises "MOT testing" they are not actually a test station. Anyway although it was done last September having had a quick look at the car it seems as though it was good enough test so I'm happy.

many years back I used to be a relief manager for a garage chain,used to do the same.some sites used to do mots others didn't and I would take em to a local test station,repair/retest as neccesaary,we had to charge vat on the difference between the trade test and the retail price of the test which was what we charged.last guy I can recall using was an old boy called albert inwards,leighton buzzard.the firms still going 26yrs on,i see an occasional motor with one of their tests on it even now.
