MOT Scheme – ‘Earned Recognition’

The Government Response to the Motorists Forum report on the Garage Customer Experience said, in relation to Recommendation 6:

Government is committed to maintaining high standards in the MOT test with VOSA continuing in its role as sole authority to ensure garage compliance with the MOT test regime. Garages which have signed up to an OFT(TSI) backed Code are likely to pose less risk to consumers and should benefit from “earned recognition”.

VOSA’s policy through 2013/14 will be to introduce membership of consumer codes accredited by the Office of Fair Trading or Trading Standards Institute as an element for evaluation in our Site Assessment processes. MOT garages demonstrating membership of an accredited code will be included in our risk matrix.

VOSA will begin with a cautious approach to risk evaluation until sufficient evidence has been built up to prove that accredited code membership delivers the consumer benefits that are anticipated. We will work with industry, code owners and the TSI to develop and review proposals."
