Transporter 1.9 oil pump shaft (1995 t4)

As above have a 1.9 t4 transporter in with a leaking water pump. It was fitted in January along with a new belt kit in January at another garage. The water pump runs off the alternator belt but you need to remove the pulley for the oil pumps intermediate shaft to be able to remove it. This requires removal of the timing belt. When I removed the timing belt I noticed a fair bit of free play in the pulley. The bolt was also partially rounded so I removed the retaining bolts for the shafts oil deal and removed it completely. This is what I found,



Sorry the pictures aren't the clearest, I think there's something wrong with my phones camera lense. The small parts at the bottom left of the first photo have broken off the shaft as can be seen clearer in the second photo (the rough edge just to the left of the seal). I don't think this is causing my play? If found a diagram and took a video that I think will help you guys understand better





To me it looks like no.8 in the picture is missing? Has anyone had experience with these engines that could shed some light on this for me? I've got a customer that will need a phone call tomorow morning and would rather tell him some good news if possible!
