Wrong details on mot

Hi ash123 and welcome to the forum (and sorry I only just saw your PM).

You did the right thing and contacted them right away, and it's a mistake many have made in the past and plenty will do in the future. At least in future hopefully you'll get the details directly off the vehicle and not rely on a job card or previous MOT certificate.

As for what will happen next, hopefully all you'll be getting will be a severe telling off and you'll have to promise never to do it again (in writing). stealth (the forum friendly VE ) may be able to give a better answer.

According to the MOT Testing Guide there is potential for DVSA to issue an ''Advisory Warning Letter'' with a points value of 20, which falls below the threshold of 30 points for a 5 year formal warning. I've added a link to the relevant section for reference.

As you will see from the text, the AWL cannot be issued unless the tester has had previous advice for the same mistake/error/oversight.

If I was your local VE I would close the office dooor & give you a good bo**ocking.

Learn from your mistake ash123 & move on. Ignore the job card and ALWAYS take the details from the vehicle, If you get a mis match on MOTCOMP then investigate BEFORE you complete the log on.

Depends on whether or nor DVLA have updated the V5 details or not at the time of registering for test.

I've had to do replacements on a few occasions for this scenario

It seems to be a "culture" testers don't fully understand the seriousness of the scheme
It's not differcult to take a pen and a clip board walk to the car and record the registration number,the vin on a new vt29
It could be on the other hand that the offence may incur the maximum punishment that can be taken.
I get job cards and have to correct mistakes made by reception. The morale of the story is
Don't rely on what other people have written,do it yourself and record what you see on the vehicle.

Points would be issued to both if the points total is 30 or more. If below 30 it's like having a slap on the wrist (or a severe telling off behind closed doors ) .

In the case you're talking about, if it's the first time it's happened and/or there has been no previous formal warnings and/or points the period would be two years. Items in this table stay on your (and the VTS's) record for two years the first time you get caught. Everything else is five years.

30 or more they'd have to issue points. Less than that and a dark soundproofed room with a blunt instrument should do the trick.

Just don't (and I'm sure you wont) do it again. We all learn from our mistakes.
