Hi all

I'm hunting for information on how to carry out a brake efficiency test on a 2005 Renault Grand Scenic fitted with an electronic parking brake.

With front wheels rotating on the rollers and handbrake engaged the handbrake made a strange noise and locked up and couldn't be released, even with the mechanical release or a diagnostic.

I have since read that in this situation the car would think the handbrake isn't applying enough pressure and increase pressure to try and stop the car rolling, which obviously wouldn't work with the front on a rolling road.

Is it incorrect to apply an epb on a front brake efficiency test? Should the car be strapped down instead? Are there any special instructions in the VSI on how to carry out a brake efficiency test on a renault/grand scenic with an epb?

Not had any problems while applying the handbrake to test the fronts. Sounds like you've been unlucky.

its a renault what else do you expect on french rubbish your always get loads of work off them when you get them in for a mot we are in a area that has had a renault main dealer for years so we get a lot of in s11266

I would think there has to be a fault in the system somewhere preventing the release.

There is a manual release handle, I believe its yellow and located in the boot. This will release the parking brake but the system will need to be reset afterwards.

The procedure to turn the EPB back on after using the manual release is such.

turn your ignition on without starting engine, have drivers door open and press lock button on keycard
put keycard in reader and press start button for 5 seconds.
pull large part of manual handbrake handle and push small button with red light without letting go of larger handle and you should hear the handbrake motor reset
