You know when you here that bottom end knocking/rumble!!
This is what you might find has happened,the engine ran short of oil to the extent the shell bearing worn to the point it was being "hammered " between crank and conrod,it got worn so thin the shell spun round inside the conrod and damaged both rod end caps and crank journal.
The shell bearing at lower part of the photo is the hammered one.look closely and you'll see what I mean.
The engine is from a wrx impreza that belongs to a friend which iam just about to start rebuilding,he has give me a substantial budget.

After taking the Micky out the guy who owns this car I had to eat humble pie as it turned out the oil pump had failed, not his incompetence to regular check his oil.
Within the pump to bolts had come slack and the plunger inside had stuck effecting its ability to maintain pressure.
Got everything now to prepare for rebuild

Here's a couple of grands worth of parts,
Not got the bill for the machining yet for the block rebore due to oversize race pistons and crank regrind.
Got a good deal on the pistons which are STI version 8 race pistons,should of been £350.00 +vat each,yes each!!!paid £600 all in, however had to by rings for them,another £200.00 for the rings.
Forged rods are Manley got a good deal £500 for the set.
Made a start on the rebuild earlier this evening

Not many places can cater for re grinding impreza cranks due how narrow the crank is,ended up trying 3 places to have it done ,but they have made a real good job

Nice piston if you like that sort of thing.

Nice job of the block

Update.
STI steel head gaskets in place ready for the cylinder heads to be fitted
Heads in place and managed to start the engine detailing regards paint.
Block and heads had a coat of very high temp primer this afternoon.

Although the cylinder head bolts are useable again, I decided to use new ones

Managed to get the engine painted last night, starting to look the business now.
Just waiting for the camshafts which i had reprofiled to my own specs by the machine shop to come back.
To purchase the new ones from a supplier required cost over 700 pound ,a good tip when it can be done is to have the old ones reprofiled by a machine shop that knows what there are doing regards this type of machining,it helps as it keeps the costs in check.
I've just snapped a bolt in the head so iam off to drill and tap it , after I've had a be vie!!

When connecting up the engine loom one thing I could not find and I know this sounds daft cant rememberer taken it out was an oil pressure switch.
Having a new one to go in the hole where it goes had the original oil gallery plug installed,
The wire although present within the loom had been fastened out the way.
After quizzing the owner regards any switch being removed or a gauge fitted instead the answer was neither.
He never ever noticed that the oil warning lamp on the dash never worked.
Well it all becomes apparent now what happens when something goes wrong and no warning system is in place.
Looks like the owner is in for some technical training
