Damaged wheel

Fail for me, possibly with a dangerous marker.

Definitely a fail with a tick in the dangerous box, with consideration given to abandon

Suppose you had no brake test weight to calculate brake efficiency and only two wheel brakes locked.

Would you carry out a decel test?

If you felt it was safe enough to put in the rollers why wouldn't you feel it would be safe on the road? Wheels/tyres/suspension go through more stresses on the rollers as opposed to a normal road brake test.

To be fair I knew that members would roller brake test it, but then was interested in whether members would take the vehicle out on public roads to do a decel test if necessary.

Given the amount of the bead area of the tyre I can see in that picture, it does not look like much of that bead is left protected by the damaged rim, so in my opinion I would want a closer look at the wheel before I commit myself to a decel test.

As regards brake forces acting, the roller brake test is designed to show the equivalent brake efficiency as to that what would be recorded using the brake decelerometer.  

Now if you decide that the wheel is in a dangerous condition, thus you are saying, "Warning in my opinion the vehicle is dangerous to drive" because....

Next you say "I would carry out a decel test", which in the majority of cases would be on a public road, then I ask what if the tyre deflated on the rim and caused unnecessary damage while driving on public roads?

Now VOSA do point out that a tyre under-inflated in itself is not a reason for rejection, but a brake test might be inadvisable because of possible damage.

That's only a under-inflated tyre, what do you think VOSA's view would be on conducting a brake test either way based on that evidence looking at you?

If you had asked "Would I drive it on public roads" I would probably say no, but I would need to see it first. I reckon from that pic that there is still three or four mm of flange to hold the tyre in place.

No need for a "dangerous", The fact that I have failed it means it's not fit for road use, I don't fail things and expect the car to be used on the road

No need to abandon, If it goes pop in the rollers the wheel isn't going to get any more damaged. I can decel that up the side if my workshop and into the loading area behind the industrial estate, All private ground, enough room to Uturn a wagon and drag. I'm hardly going to hit anything at 20MPH

The customer has come in for an MOT, he's gonna be upset that it failed, no need to wind him right up. And is he going to pay for an "abandoned"
