Subframe Welding (With Pictures)

looks braised to me also, or maybe poorly prepared gas welding, was there any penetration, if has stuck and won't fall off when inspected I would give a fairly descriptive advise saying how crap the repair is

Yes very poor repair, worrying because it looks like an engine cover/tray could be fitted masking the corrosion. Know its not the quiz but is it an Astra ?.

I was told it was mig welded. I think ivor is spot on.

I was asked (indirectly) if it would pass an MOT like that. Looking at the pictures I can't see any reason why it wouldn't but thought I would get a few different opinions. The car was pulling to the left until this "repair" was carried out so it obviously would effect the steering when the "repair" will fail, but, during an MOT are we to know that? On the last picture it does look like there is a small hole at the top but that could just be the way the picture was taken. You can kind of see it in the first picture too.

tim, now that you mention it there does seem to be a shadow between the bolt and subframe

Looks to be mig welded, it's been layered up in blobs.

It's a horrible welding repair

The reason for rejection would be found under suspension components.
The subframe is a suspension component.
Where the defect is on the component -prescribed areas and non prescribed areas rfr "s can not be applied to that part .

Ok. Thanks guys. So based on the pictures it would probably be an inappropriate repair then?

The sub-frame in the picture can't possibly be passed with a repair service as good as that

The introduction to the manual advises that repairs and modifications (OK it's not a modification) to a vehicle must be assessed on their merits (and the repair ain't got any in my opinion), and we must take into account the nature and function of the component. 

We are advised that repairs to highly stressed components include welding repairs to suspension components, and the sub frame is a suspension component, which has had a welded repair, which is excessive heat to a highly stressed component within the integral area of the lower suspension arm mounting points, and based on the evidence from the picture is most likely to adversely affect the road worthiness of the vehicle at some point, like after the road wheel fouling a good pot hole.

 

Inappropriate would be a better word used as its in the manual(not meaning to sound padantic )
