Freezing MOT prices!!!

I don't really see what the big deal is. No one round my way charges full price for an MOT. Most places are £40

Very true. The price doesn't need capped. It's needs to be fixed or a minimum price introduced.

I have my own testing station and as much as I believe there should be an increase in the fee, the reality is it wont make a blind bit of difference to what I can charge. Unfortunately what I charge is dictated by the loss leader garages that are offering mot's for as low as £19.99 in my town, but that's a whole other debate.....

On thing Baz, it's all very well slinging mud at motester.co.uk (and its obvious why you're doing it) but from what I have read even the likes of the RMI who have had direct meetings within the actual department of transport about an mot price increase have said that this freeze has come straight from left field.

This is now going to be 5 years without a rise, I don't think anyone who has involvement with vosa (inc councils) have any room to take the moral high ground.

On vosa own site: By committing to freeze the fee of a statutory MOT test for a car at £54.85 the government has ruled out raising the price by around £4 a test. There are 35m MOT tests done every year, with about 12m of those being charged at the full fee – so this could be a significant saving of around £50m to Britain’s drivers.

Is there not something wrong with this scheme when 65% of tests are being carried out at below the advised price?

My comment was made in relation to the MOT Trade Forum, and not at motester.co.uk (I included the source link out of courtesy). I'm sure the announcement was 100% political.

At the very first VTS council meeting we were told that fees and discounting were nothing we (as council members) could do anything about. It's always come up for discussion but the answer was always the same - it's dealt with by the DfT and the "higher" trade bodies.

The representatives of these trade bodies are, a lot of the time, made up of the top people from large multi-site companies - the very ones that appear to offer and heavily advertise low test prices in the first place.

It has to be asked, would a higher fee or, something that has been spoken about in the trade press recently, lower but fixed pricing be of benefit to their business plan? Probably not, but not getting the few pounds rise that was expected wouldn't hurt them as much as it would hurt the vast majority of test stations - independents.

I read it Dave and fully agree with the intentions, although i've had to convert the htm file into a document file to get it to print something other than lines of code.

I'll print some copies of and see if my customers will fill them in
