Is Fail for Profit to blame?.....

We all have our own differing opinions as to why and what is forcing all the new procedures in so quickly and causing chaos in the process.

Personally I felt that the Independent MOT Review caused major tremors throughout the South West area of our lovely sceptic Isle. The review forced immediate action in the form of fail and error rates and set limits the review proposed rate limits they considered to be fair and acceptable. Personally I think the actual figures and the proposed acceptable figures weren't even on the same page.

Reading this news and after looking at the spreadsheet showing all figures across all test classes it's quite clear that our trade group fail more and proportionally too. It also shows that after Lighting, Brakes is the 2nd highest fail rate. It also has a high re-test fail rate.

I think the Fail for Profit must be in some way if not in every way, the cause. I'm not sure it's being handled as well as I thought it would be, but I do understand their reasons.

1. MOT Approved has always carried a "charge what you like" price tag culture for sure and we've all encountered it. I've seen 2 emission testers at an EXPO Trade show, 1 MOT Approved and the other not Approved. I remember (after smelling the salts), that the price difference was very large, I thought it was a typo'.

Questioned the price and to my surprise I had got it wrong, I'd totally missed the "buy today @ £xxxx" tag just behind the Manuals.

Approved Equipment for dual emission tester = £6459.00+ VAT

None Approved Equipment for dual emsssion tester, Oscilloscope, spare Temp probe, a years worth of filters, spare hose, spare nozzle, twin RPM clamps, personalised software for your workshop and a printer = £1995..........................................................................................inc VAT Boom!!


Just imagine if the recent adjustments and tweeks to the test don't work and we are Policed further by an Independent Trade Body?

We'll have Motor Codes forced onto us. Obviously all codes will require to be VOSA Approved. So we'll all need to have an Approved Codes Scheme to be testing which will be Policed like never before. This time we'll have to Organisations trying to out do each other to be "top dog" if you like.

Just imagine what it would be like for us if that happens....?


We need to organise ourselves pronto and all work together and unite to worm out the bad ones in our cheme before someone else starts to do it.


Tell everyone from the Milkman to the Cab Driver about our Forum and encourage people to join and get involved either as testers, AE's or the public looking for answers to MOT questions.

We haven't got far to go now so lets sprint the last mile please guys & girls?
