Hello, so I took my car in for a MOT months ago with no exhaust rattling prior, it went in, MOT passed but had an advisory of 'central front exhaust mounting defective' and then after driving away I noticed the exhaust was making a rattling sound which I had never noticed before.
I ended up taking the car back to the garage to book in to get this resolved and was told it needs the exhaust replacing, did it really need that doing? could they have not just replaced the mounts? I paid £340 and the exhaust still rattles.

Now, when I first took it in they could poke the exhaust and it would wobble everywhere, which it now doesn't do however when I drive I still hear it rattle here and there and honestly haven't a clue what's causing it. It sounds like it's coming from the back of the car, so I have two questions, would the whole exhaust really need to have been replaced for mountings being defective and what could the ongoing issue be? It's driving me insane. Thanks so much!

Exhaust mounting defective is a broken mounting usually can't be replaced only welded back on it the garage does that who did the work of you don't mind me asking and sometimes it could be a part full system with little joints what is the age make and model

Hello, thanks for the response! The garage is called Sams of Heckington and it's a Citroen C4 Cactus 2018

Ok the center front exhaust mounting on those is flimsy at best and cracks its like a butterfly s wings there is 2 parts to the system a long front to rear part and a rear silencer probably original from New so what they have done is replace the whole system with a None genuine system from a local factors however the mounting s are a different designs and superior to the original one's your other point it might just need re adusting and for the price parts Labour and VAT very reasonable price hope that helps

again, thank you so much for the info! I checked and it was actually £370 but assume that's still a reasonable price and your explanation has honestly put my mind at ease a fair bit as I was really stressed thinking I had just wasted that money and I really can't afford to right now that's for sure.
I still find it odd how the exhaust was never rattling until I took it into the garage for the MOT, which makes me worry that something had been messed with knowing I'd end up paying to get it fixed. I've also taken the car back three times to get the ongoing rattling from the new exhaust fixed but am literally getting nowhere. They can't seem to find a problem and the annoyance is that it goes onto the ramp and of course it doesn't make the noise but when I drive or am idle it does it here and there

The mot test is only a visual inspection and the tester won't be poking or pulling it around to cause damage.
The tester will visual assess the components and that's it ,if it's just above scrap then it should be ok to meet the minimum standards for the mot .
Sometimes mountings can be repaired but the rest of the system may need changing for other reasons and may be more financially economical for you to have it replaced,rather then a bodge job

If the rattle is persistent then take it back and ask to speak to someone in charge to investigate,drive the car with the person to confirm your concerns and confirm it's a rattle to do with the exhaust and not something else that is rattling ,good luck

Thanks for the info!

I'd hope that'd be the case but always nervous incase intentional damage is made to profit out of me having to get it fixed, always worried as you hear all sorts and like I say, especially as it never had the rattle until after I drove off from the MOT place.

I've been back three times and nobody has a clue, like I say, they just put it on a ramp and then wobble this and that and can't replicate the sound I just don't know what to do and feel like giving up with it as I'm fed up of going there, they probably think I'm making it up at this point. Do you know if it's likely to be any issue now or down the line, the rattle? or completely fine, just an annoyance?

It's impossible for us to diagnose a rattle on here unfortunately.
Best advice I can give is take the vehicle to a different garage and take them out in the car and show them the issue ,that's the only way to move forward .
It may be coincidentally the rattle came on after the mot as it does happen ,if may be nothing to do with the exhaust it needs a fresh pair of
Eyes and someone who cares to take a look ,like I said try elsewhere,it may be nothing but get it looked at .

You know what, I do wonder if it is something entirely different to the exhaust that's rattling.
I mean, it started rattling after the MOT, I then since got a new exhaust and it's still rattling so although I've always assumed it must've been that maybe it's not and is indeed something else. It does sound like it's coming from the back of the car but I've always only looked at the exhaust so I need to stop when it rattles next time and hope it carries on by the time I get out to try and inspect a bit more, it's a massive pain in the arse

I'm just baffled, I don't even know if it is the exhaust rattling at this point or if it's something else at the back of the car but its' so intermittent. I can drive, it does it, I stop and then by the time I get out it stops so it's hard to ever get a good look when it's doing it and unfortunately whenever I've gone to the garage it doesn't bloody do it

Don't you believe it, I've had motors that have been to main dealers with rattle underneath somewhere. Only to find it's a bit of the aluminium heat shield that's oxidised and corroded, leaving a washer sized hole!
Then out with the repair washers.

was the entire exhaust changed?the rear box mount above the axle rots thru and isnt always immediately obvious and if just the front section got changed the assorted pushing/pulling cud finish off an already rotten mount,cud be wrong......

Let's just think about this for a minute....

You take your car for an mot and to that point there is no rattles!

You drive away from your mot station and you have a rattle!

You go back and £370 later you still have a rattle!

Your exhaust system was not the cause of the rattle.

You can't "unbreak" the broken,you can only break the unbroken to break the break of the unbroken, for me, you cannot unbreak me, for I am already broken,so you have no need to break the break because I am not unbroken.
