Hi there
The MOT tester stated verbally that the car failed the 3.5% CO initial test of the Basic Emissions Test.
When the MOT Tester went to perform the second test, with the revs raised, the car started to overheat, so the test was stalled.
He stated that I will be supplied no emissions details because the 2nd test was not completed.
He advised to get a new catalytic converter, but said that might not be the problem.
I have no idea if it failed by a tiny amount or a huge amount, and have no idea if his advice to buy a catalytic converter from him {at twice the price I can get the same one online} will sort the emissions.
Q1 - Is it "normal" to not be supplied ANY emissions paperwork, if part 2 of emissions test is not completed?
Q2 - is it "legal" to not supply any emissions paperwork?

The MOT Test should have been aborted car unfit to test due engine fault and No TEST Fee charged

He didn't complete a test and any test completed the TEST station should keep a copy of the emissions printout pass or fail with the VT40 inspection sheet and retain them for 3 months hope that is the information you need because that's how it should have been done pal

Incorrect, fee can be charged. It is not the tester or AE’s fault the test had to be abandoned.
Had it have been aborted, you are correct that no fee can be charged but that would be due to the issue being NT or AEs fault

Where the test has to be abandoned, as in this case, the NT should state the reason on the VT30.

The tester is well within their rights to stop, as this tester has done, and is not required to supply an emissions report as the test was incomplete.

With regard the new CAT, it likely will pass the emissions test with a new, virgin, unit. Come next year though, its entirely possible it’ll be knackered again. We see it all the time, ultimately, it will become ‘plugged’ again unless any underlying issues are resolved.

We also charge twice what you can get a cat from the internet for. Firstly it’ll be fitted and warrantied all in one place putting you in a far stronger position. Besides that, you seen how much a decent restaurant charges for a meal, far more than the ingredients from Tesco.

That’ll be the AE’s liability, and is why we’re encouraged to use the abort/abandon and pre-checks. The tester did the right thing in stopping the test.

I disagree. Most testers do the emissions test at the end of the test. If the tester has spent 40 minutes doing the inspection and then has to abandon on the last item, I believe it is absolutely fair that they should charge for their time.
The main point behind the emissions report is that had he have given you paperwork it would be not only useless but potentially a red herring. Ultimately, your car overheated and it shouldn’t, that wasn’t the testers fault.
I appreciate you may be frustrated and/or disappointed at the result of your test but that frustration/disappointment is being misplaced.

Perhaps find a garage you trust, it makes life a lot easier for all involved.

I would not have charged the customer because he's not had full test result ! when the boss had an heart ❤ attack mid test 2 years I completed it And I told Wilson that on our recent site visit he was NOT that fussed

If the car started to overheat 10 minutes in, I wouldn’t charge either. If I’ve done full inspection, RBT and a failed BET test and it overheats on a full cat test, I’d charge every time.

As explained before, I wanted to see paperwork from the first half of the emissions test, because I have no paperwork and the tester cannot remember, whether it was just over 3.5 or a long way over 3.5.
This message does not need a response from you, dwain, I am merely clarifying with you, that as a customer I am disappointed, and that as a customer I would like to have paperwork about the first half of the test.
The tester's vagueness was superlative, and inspired no confidence.
As for just using a garage I trust, regrettably I don't now any trustworthy garages in the area. If only things were that simple dwain.

What is the vehicle age make and model ? Dwain is correct I would NOT have charged you for the TEST others can and are allowed to under the rules

No, I don’t disagree that you’re disappointed, of course not. I disagree with your opinion that a fee shouldn’t be charged.

You’re coming across in a very similar way to the majority of complaints we have to deal with in our trade…..everything is somebody else’s fault. The tester has done nothing wrong, I have no direct horse in the race, but boy do the public need putting right a lot of the time, this trade is tough enough without dummies being spat out when nothing untoward has occurred.
