The reason for rejection stated in another post above refers to presence and security so therefore does not cover corrosion

The way things are and the advice from DVSA at the moment and given the seriousness of the component is to fail it with the nearest rfr .(just an opinion )
If it was me testing it and the back plate was so bad like you described then to stay out of trouble is to abandoned the test .

I can't see where the post refers to a backplate fitted to a hub fitted with disc or drum brakes, so my opinion is that if it is on a disc brake no problem but a drum brake has the shoes fitted to it so that may well fail

Never assume during an MOT Paul, if in doubt pass and advise.

Unless the brake cable is attached to the backplate it's a clear pass, on disc brakes it's more of a heatshield than anything

I would go with that. Section 3.6 states this applies to ALL braking systems. If it's a backplate carrying brake cylinder and brake shoe mountings etc but the components are secure then I would use the above RFR.

agreed, an anomaly MOI 3.5.1j does exist in the testers inspection manual but not in comp2... Congrats hac665 I am notifying through the feedback facilty. Well done.

I just remember some one possible our old friend Martin saying on a refresher not to use that rfr for brake components ,but the wording may of changed since then ,see if I can dig out the notes .
