I have got a 1994 registered in UK Nissan Skyline coming in for test . Apparently it will not pass an emissions cat test , but the presenter says he has a letter from VOSA saying that it does not need a cat test .
As I have never come across this before I was wondering if this sounds right , and if anyone has an idea what the letter should look like . I assume it will be on official headed paper , but is it a standard form with a VT number on it ?

My EGA asks me what year it was first registered and after I have told it I get no further input as to what kind of test is carried out . Am I risking trouble if I tell the EGA that it was registered before 1992 so that it carries out a non-cat test when the registration date is later ?

Just had a thought and may answer my own question . The letter will probably have the first 'USED' date which determines the type of test rather than the first 'REGISTERED' date . I might be wrong . I usually am .

Cat test on a 1994 import would only be where an exact match can be found on the database ,being an import its not going to be there so test to 3.5 co and 1200 ppm.
Personally l I would not be concerned regards the letter but it won't do any harm to make a copy ,info is given in the manual regards personal imports.
I can't comment on your EGA,
Do the bet test 1st and see what results come back like,if the results meet the non cat standard then its passed,don't matter if the print out states its failed,if that don't happen bearing in mind what you say regards your EGA, that it won't let you choose non cat test,proceed to extended test and if the results met the non cat standard then its passed ,ignore where the print out sez its failed the main point is you've tested it to the lesser standard - non cat
Our EGA let's us or directs us to the option of a non cat test manually after it fails the bet test.

Tested it today and it wasn't a bad old bus for it's age . Apparently I am the first tester ever to advise that it don't have proper front indicators . It has a strip of orange LEDs stuck on across the lower edge of each headlamp . It did however have proper side-repeaters . I am also the first tester to fail it on a wheelnut that has been missing for over FIVE years . The presenter was very surprised . He thought the missing wheelnut was passable as nobody had ever even advised on it . Had to do a decel due to it having a LSD . It don't take long to get to 20mph with over 400 ponies hiding under the bonnet ;-)

1995 "N" UK reg onwards was the first date for mandatory cat testing. K,L & M reg only get a full cat test if there is an EXACT match on VIN & engine codes in the EGA database.

This is where you need to go to the online book. Lots of Renault models of this era also asked for a match on the make of ECU/injection system eg Bosch, Siemens, Magnetti Marelli etc.

It's highly unlikely that any import of that era will be an exact match for a cat test.
