So what kind of New stuff will we need? First I have heard of it

It will be browser based, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc. These browsers will work with other operating systems.

From what we've heard so far the minimum you'll need is....

an internet connection, preferably broadband

a modem/router connected to...

a PC/laptop/tablet with a browser installed

a printer

You'll be able to add a wireless router which will allow you to have various forms of equipment linked to it eg. a tablet or even a smart phone with your checklist which you can use in the test bay.

All tests will have to be logged onto the system from the internet connection for the VTS but you'll be able to access other features of the system (possibly to include a form of training) from anywhere in the world. You'll be able to order test slots while sunning yourself on a beach thousands of miles away!

Maybe you think you're joking but that's one aspect of the plan Gaz.

There's been no indication of that yet Gaz. What has been said is that there will be far less of a delay getting news, special notices, changes to the test, etc. to us. Some of the points raised right here in the forum could be answered in a matter of days and not the weeks (and sometimes months) it takes now. There may well be a system to message your VE or area office, possibly with the option of adding attachments (ie. photos, videos) on any problems or questions you may have.

I'm sure that there will be some testers that will be using that system almost daily.

On the "Mechanics" of the program. I NEED bigger drop down menus, I have had a new mouse recently which seems very responsive, and about 20 times a day I find that when I click "Nearside" the click moves the pointer to "Offside", I usually notice these and correct, but I've had a couple sneak through, fortunately on advisories

I think it's a bit of a joke. Is the test fee slot coming down in price? A proportion of the slot cost pays for the hardware and support we currently have. You need IMO 2 x iPad type devices because when one gets dropped you need system redundancy. Printer, cheap enough, even if you don't print certificates,there will be the odd special notice,statement of accounts, test logs, broadband cost. Siemens free phone line a thing of the past. I reackon I'll spend 2k on hardware + support in the first 3 years. Vosa should be liaising with the vts councils to try to get some "approved" kit. More for the buying power than anything else.

You don't even need a tablet. We have a computer that we use for autodata so that can be used for comp 2. We have a printer for invoices etc. Doesn't every garage? We have, like most garages, a broadband connection already. With the rolling out of 4G you could easily use a smartphone for an Internet connection even on 3G. I have an 3 year old iPod touch that I wouldn't mind using in the garage connected to the wifi. I'm sure others would be just as happy to use thier smart phones.
