Should car sales dealers be allowed to carryout mot's?

Customer came in last week complaining that his brakes were not working correctly and noisy. I pulled all four wheels off and could see the front brake pads were almost brand new. I looked at the rear pads and could see they were very close to the legal limit. I ended up changing the rear discs/pads and calipers. When I used the scanner to retract the old calipers and reset the new calipers fitted I did not notice anything wrong. When I drove the car out and parked on the forecourt everything seemed okay. The customer came to collect the car and advised that the EPB light was flashing. I went to have a look and could see the EPB switch light flashing and a park light in the IPC also flashing on/off. I said to the customer I'll need to put the scanner back on and see what was wrong!

When I started to drive the car across the forecourt I immediately felt the car dragging. I knew straight away that a brake was binding. When I tested the EPB brakes the nearside was showing as faulty in operation. A supposed new caliper faulty even before the customer removed the car. I ordered a new one and fitted the same day and the brakes then worked okay.

The customer brought the car back asking us to carryout a A/C regas. There was only about 50 g of refrigerant in. After carrying out the A/C service I found that the vent temperature was too high. After checking the compressor power supply and ground to be okay, and checking the terminals resistance and found to be okay around 10.4 ohms, I then looked at the front pulley and noticed the centre bolt seemed loose. I then removed the driver's front road wheel and inner arch liner. The offside front suspension coil spring was broken at the top, and the shocker did seem to be seeping oil at this time. When I examined the compressor front pulley I noticed a small bolt missing and the centre of the pulley seemed loose. Having then removed the belt the compressor pulley rotated without any resistance whatsoever, which to me pointed to the internal mechanism of the compressor as being damaged.

The customer agreed to me fitting a new compressor. The new compressor pulley felt like it had to overcome the internal resistance to rotate while the old compressor had no resistance to rotation at all. My suspicions were correct in that something internal had failed in the compressor.

Yes I read the instructions that came with the new compressor. No instructions were included either in the booklet or online with their website to advise if I needed to put any pag oil in the compressor! I rang the company who advised me that the compressor is factory filled. In the booklet the manufacturer advises that if a DMF is faulty then the warranty on a compressor is void.

The customer did mention that he experienced a noise from the engine but did not know what it was last week when I changed the oil and filter. Now I'd heard a noise but could not place it and say what the cause was at the time, however today after reading the booklet for the A/C system, I felt I needed to look deeper. Operation of the clutch pedal stopped the noise which now I'm thinking is the clutch/DMF. I'll need to tell the customer tomorrow that it is not recommended to use the A/C system while the clutch is faulty. 

What's all this got to do with mot's?

Well the customer got no advisories from the mot paperwork from the sales dealer. The rear brakes were shot and should have been advised to the customer. We can't know how long the spring has been broken, but the spring end is heavily corroded at the point of fracture, and he only got the car last week. The shocker, yes could start leaking at any time, so again nothing can be said.

I don't know how much the guy will have paid for the car, but his bill now will be heading towards a couple of grand for all the work he has recently had done.
