Just completed annual assessment (without any kind of revision this year DOH!

) and had numerous questions on test class for higher powered quads, 600CC 45BHP was one example.

Please show me in the manual where it says which european class they are.

M1 - A vehicle with 4 or more wheels used for the carriage of passengers, with no more than 8 passenger seats in addition to the driver’s seat. This includes dual purpose vehicles, motor caravans and ambulances, But does not include quadricycles.

L6 - Light quadricycle - a four-wheeled vehicle with a maximum unladen mass of 350kg (not including the batteries in an electrically powered vehicle) a maximum speed not exceeding 45km/h, not more than 50cc for spark ignition engine or 4KW for any other power unit

L7 vehicle Quadricycle - a four-wheeled vehicle with a maximum unladen mass 400kg or 550kg for a goods vehicle (not including the batteries in an electrically powered vehicle) and a maximum net power of 15KW (21BHP)

Its going to be somewhere obvious and i'll look a tit, but can't see it. Or those vehicles, for test purposes, are no longer classified as 'quadricycles'

yup,only 2 quad classes mentioned which must make it a m1 class 4,and yup ive been wrong before!as an aside i asked a ve a few years back similar cos most quads are clearly over the 20bhp jobby.my query was how do i find out what hp its rated for and is it a quad or not or shud we send em for a bike test instead maybe?still waiting on him getting back to me....irrelevant to me cos our ramps too wide anyway(and yeah i know but our aim facility is at the end of it alright?)so ive always deathed em out on that and roller/decelerometer issues but nice to know theyre testing us on relevant stuff that we are gonna be dealing with regular.....dont suppose there was anything on your exam that might help people stop mixing up 4 and 7 was there?THAT might be an actual help.....

"If there is significant doubt about the power output or the weight of the vehicle, the presenter must provide documentary evidence."

Interesting question and nice to see it cleared up.
But I've never had one presented and I doubt if I ever will. Being in an agricultural area there's loads around here but they're all tax and test exempt under the "short journeys between fields" regulation.

To be clear, it doesn’t actually say L6 & L7 quads with higher weights and power outputs are tested as Class 4 (which wasn’t an option in the test, presumably you mean M1), does it?

I did get asked, and found, the sentence relating to doubt/documentary evidence.

It's in the first table in Part 2 which lists the different classes dwain

- copied and pasted, I've *** the relevant info for you. To be read in conjuction with the table further down describing quad weight & power etc.

Class 4 Three-wheeled vehicles more than 450kg ULW - category L5

***** Quadricycles - category ***L6 or *** L7

Cars and Taxis - category M1

Minibuses, motor caravans, dual purpose vehicles and ambulances up to 12 passenger seats - category M1 or M2

American pickups up to 6500kg DGW
Goods vehicles not exceeding 3,000kg DGW - category N1

I've got problem with that bit mate....until you read the max KW(bhp) L6 4KW, L7 15KW, which excludes 600cc 45bhp quad, so you then loop back to M1 but it specifically states it doesn't include quadricyles. If indeed it said, as you did; heavier, more powerful quadricyles are classed as M1, dead easy.

Instead of doing that, they put an emphasis on it in an assessment 'to highlight the nuances of the inspection manual'

Thats the same smart arsed answer I got when I questioned why exhaust security was covered in Body, and Nuisance.

For info, one of my customers sells these things, they are "L" class on the V5. I know this because he couldnt work out if he could test them or not & I started looking at the V5's for relevant weight & power info.

They are "L" due to NOT being passenger carrying vehicles. But they get the same test as an M1 by virtue of the size & power of the blimmin things.

This year's again with Pavarotti ( Tony hicks ) did that straight away when we could do it 😁 and he give us a stick with everything on and boss prints a certificate off

DVSA wish that quads didn't exist. They are all class 4 in effect. They all need front number plates and a parking brake system in place. Those two alone will get shot of most of them.

Some were trying to make them agricultural to get around the MOT rules - that didn't last too long. It only took DVSA 10 years plus to get up to speed with the rest of the world.

I will not test a quadbike . I am not familiar with how they operate , nor do I know how to ride one or would feel safe on one . Pass it on to somebody that knows what they are doing with it . The fly-weight cars I will tackle though . They have doors and a roof and a steering wheel . Aixams etc classed as quads ?

the reason i queried originally was cat tests(cos none of em would ever pass one)and in a further attempt to muddy the waters what about the narrow wheel ones(2/3 depending)and ive seen a few local delivering pizzas etc,4wd+load area = dual purpose!its good to know however that i aint the only guy deathing em out!describing what appears to be(technically) a standard class 4 as a quad when it legally aint however is typical of the ambiguous dogsh1t questions provided and its about time they got their act together.

ok,so its checked and its dwains 45hp version.logbook says L5 whatever as per your info so it aint m1 but theres no test class for quads covering that so youve had to accept it as a straight class 4.cat or no cat?hazards?reverse lamps?brake percentages/handbrake?you get the picture,what standards do you test it to?or is this another where its fooking dvsa up as well so theyve decided to spread the joy(remember living vans?!!!!

) via the exam despite us having no guidance or info on em?

or is my cynical streak showing again?cos if thats the case then fooking some poor bastard over in the exam merely to soothe their feelings is a little ott.
