@daveg, that burbling mess, with your usual uneccesary jibe, explained and helped with nothing. Look at nitros44,s diagram. Follow the centre line of the strut down to ground level. Note that it touches the ground in front of the wheel. This is what makes the wheel behave as if it is being dragged rather than pushed. That is why, without any force acting on it from the steering, the wheels will self centre mainly due to the castor angle.

That's what I thought I said here;

For every ACTION, there is an EQUAL and OPPOSITE reaction.

You just can't have one without the others can you?

So the action has a reaction, which is the EQUAL part in the opposite direction

Junaid, we may be slightly at cross wires but to clear the misunderstanding if we are having one, I agree with your understanding of castor and king pin inclination (SAI) as you wrote previously, the point I was trying to make was that colleges in further education only introduce subjects like castor etc, they do not go into depth in the subject and VOSA follow a similar view to see if the fundamental basics can be undertsood for mot purposes, the science of understanding the subject is OTT as far as the mot scheme rules go. Maybe there are a lot of NTs with personal experience and no formal higher education training on the forum, thus when individuals start to talk "outside the box", everyone jumps in and says your wrong because that is not what they were told, but they have not got higher level education so they have never been told any difference, hence they will not understand your views and understanding.

On a separate note, you might like to re-think your last part above with reference to negative temperatures, where you say that there is no existance of heat?

I'll take it at the moment that you have never had a freeze burn, thus as temperature reduces below freezing it actually does burn your skin.

Two temperatures, which are a measure of HOTNESS and COLDNESS if equal, i.e. minus 100 degrees C and + 100 degrees C are both equal and opposite, both will positively burn you, but one is called a freeze burn, both equally very dangerous.

Going back to the original question;


Steering self centering (or self righting) is mainly produced by?
A = king pin inclination
B = toe in or toe out
C = camber
D = castor

Castor angle is the angle of the kpi/sai but from a side view and both assist in the self centering of the steering.i understand that when the steering is turned that the kpi/sai through the action of the wheels and tyres does lift the suspension,which when released the steering does have tendency to self center,but what you have to bear in mind at the same time that during the same process of the steering turning the effect of castor will also begin to cause the steering to self center.

Castor and kpi/sai provide steering stability ok,they will also support or work against each other,and the purpose of positive castor is to improve steering stability,so through the castor,the wheels are kept in the straight forward position,in other words,when a vehicle is being driven the
action of the castor is self centering the steering at all times,whereas kpi/sai more or less only comes into action at bends or full turns.

If castor is influencing the steering at all times, then once again it can be considered as the MAIN SELF CENTERING OF THE TWO.
All vehicles these days have a castor angle, that's a positive one,a negative caster where steering geometry is concerned does not work,to my knowledge it doesn't exist,not these days anyway,may of been around on vehicles when the beetles( band from liverpool) where at number one,some years back.
The only vehicles that i have come across with no kpi/sai is the Suzuki jimny and some subaru""s which rely on caster/power steering
