Hi guys, I'm new here, this forum was recommended to me by another user I speak to on another forum.

Just noticed a retest booked in for Monday and the initial tester was a floating/temporary tester. I had a quick look on mot history of the vehicle and he has failed it a week ago on a few bits and he has issued quite a few advisories. Looking at the test history it failed on a good bit more in May and after having a chat with my boss he told me the vehicle had been purchased from the auction not long ago.

So if I retest and the repairs I check are ok and I also check the advisories are still pass worthy, in the event of any sort of appeal further down the line is that the end of my involvement? On the off chance the floating tester has missed anything, eg some of the items that the test in May brought to light?

PS I hate retesting temporary mot testers retests.

bullterrierfan welcome, if you retest the said vehicle you are only responsible for the fail items and anything that could be affected by those repairs, e.g. welding a prescribed area but failed to check the seat belt/frame etc. If it is obvious you notice a defect that should not pass then yes you should fail it, but other than that, you are only responsible for the fail items and anything affected by them, and yes you should check the advisories, then what I do is record the fact that I only retested the said vehicle on the VT20, in the event of problems it is the first place DVSA will look to check details, once they check that they would then look further, your back is covered as I see it, but stand to be corrected.

You can't "unbreak" the broken,you can only break the unbroken to break the break of the unbroken, for me, you cannot unbreak me, for I am already broken,so you have no need to break the break because I am not unbroken.

Good point from Stealth. If you don't carry out a full test however, and let's face it most bosses are not keen to lose time they don't think necessary, then you are only responsible for the parts you had to retest. But it would be a good idea to check as much as possible over and above what you need to to be as sure as you can that the vehicle is worthy of a certificate. There is no need to note that you only carried out a retest as it is already recorded as such on the system.

think hes just worried about carrying the can for someone who aint(and might never be again)actually there,perfectly normal reaction particularly if you've already had some of his retests and they look a bit iffy.not saying that's the case tho.

i tend to have good look round we use agency testers they tend to be a rule on to there self and the one that does the sat test misses loads when retesting them i have found missed broken coil springs amongst other other items

Retested this vehicle today, the tester had done alright from what I could see, I think the tester that had failed it in May had incorrectly failed items as the corrosion they had chalked up was not within prescribed areas. Don't get me wrong the vehicle is in a poor condition but meets the minimum criteria that is the mot.
