mot should it have failed?

Hi sarab, Can you get the exact wording of the advisory? Has the car been in use for the two weeks since? What exactly has failed?

For an 'inverted appeal' (the vehicle passed where you think it should have failed) you have 28 days to complain depending on the item/s........

.......will get you there and confirm if I am correct. Realisticaly it is not possible for someone on the forum to give a retrospective, accurate verdict. You need a DVSA Vehicle Examiner to check the vehicle, however if the vehicle has been repaired or similar, you may well have jeopardised any chance of a successful appeal.

I had a similar issue about a month ago. Both rear brake disks were very badly corroded and had chunks missing out of them. The rear pads were quite low on one side too. It passed the visual inspection (just) and flew through the brake performance test. I manually advised the condition of the disks as I felt the pre written advisory (the one you got sarab) didn't quite do the condition of the disks justice. I had even allied over the manager/quality control tester to ask his opinion. We both agreed that although the disks needed changing they couldn't be failed on an MOT.

About a week later I got a phone call as the car had went to another garage (that wasn't an MOT station after the customer started hearing a "very loud" noise from the rear. The other garage had told them that the car should never of passed an MOT due to the condition of the brakes and quoted over £600 to put it right. Remember this garage doesn't have MOT testers. I invited the customer to come speak to me personally and he showed me pictures of the disks that he had taken in the garage after they removed the wheels. I told him that I still wouldn't be able to fail those disks based on the pictures and he was shocked to say the least. He said they the garage had mesured the thickness of the disks and said they were below the minimum recommended thickness. We don't measure disks on an MOT it's a visual inspection only based on what you can see through the wheels. I quoted him less than half the £600 the other garage were for the same work. Needless to say he got the garage to put the car back together and brought it to us for repair.

At the end of the day why would I pass a car when I could fail it and get the paid for doing the work? If that garage hadn't tried to rip the customer off I wouldn't of got the repair and most likely wouldn't of even got the phone call.

Over £1000 seems like an awful lot for rear brakes

Did he go and have a free brake & tyre check somewhere.

or was it a bulging tyre due to the perishing?
