Nottice Period for Inverted Appeal

I'll bet the vehicle in question has been sold. The new owner won't have a clue as to what's happened in the recent past. A temporary repair carried out to the MOT minimum standard should be invoiced as such if the repairs are carried out at the testing station and an advisory added stating the same.

However, what happens if the temporary repair (it could be anything, not just brakes) is carried out elsewhere or even by the owner? In either case I'd always reccommend that an advisory is added stating that the repair only just meets the minimum standard when passing on retest. The same goes for "welded" repairs covered in underseal. The person signing the certificate has to protect themselves - nobody else will.

I've had these types of conversations with DVSA staff before, in the past things that have been said to me that I don't agree with are things like;

1 / If a wheel is secure at the time you test it but then the wheel falls off the minute the vehicle rolls onto a public road, at the time you tested it we will accept that it was secure.

We had this example at our other VTS some time back, a car was tested and the wheel did actually fall off on a roundabout, the police were present at the time and they contacted VOSA back then reporting the station because the customer said I have just pulled out of that station having my mot test. A VE came and retested the car in question and said nothing more, that was the end of the matter. There are other areas to think about when these cases arise, like distance traveled before the wheel departs the said vehicle etc.

2 / I once asked over the phone about brake defects were the brakes stick on after a test had been completed, the reply came back if the brakes worked at the time you tested them then we will accept that they worked correctly at the time of the test.

3 / My last refresher training course the trainer said that mot tests can be carried out in 20 minutes per test, I disagreed and he would not agree with me on this point. Maybe a Mercedes A class you might be able to go round in about 20 minutes and get away with it, but the normal everyday car I doubt it.  

Peter . Aren't the undersides of A-Class Mercs almost totally enclosed with undertrays so not much you can see to test .

Not sure about E-Class vehicles .


Stealth .. I once tested a car and failed it on two tyres . He was back for retest within an hour saying he'd had two new tyres fitted. He had been and had two part-worn tyres fitted . You should have heard him kick off when he read the advisories regarding both his 'new' tyres being close to the limit . We had quoted him £35 each inc fitting, valve , balancing and VAT for new tyres . He had paid £25 each .

2o minute mot in your dreams i had a freelander in 1.30 minutes to test it as it was a total rust bucket i take on avarage 45/60 minutes to test a car i own the station if i could do them any faster i would but in the real world this is how long it takes

Jock . Your comment made me wonder just how long it it since it was a MOT test rather than a VOSA or 'DiVS Are us' or whatever they call themselves nowadays test .


Peter ... Have you ever tested a 90's Discovery ? ... Next question ... Have you ever tested a Lotus Elise ?
If you can answer yes to both questions then I rest my case regarding size of vehicles , the amount of testable items you can see , and how long it takes to test a car .

Old Discoveries - yes, many. Lotus Elise - no, but I have tested an Aston Martin Vanquish which I'm guessing is similar regarding undertrays.

Discoveries can take a big chunk out of 1 1/2 hours with all the potential corrosion, brake pipes and so on. The Aston also took me over an hour but I'll admit a lot of that was working out how to jack it up safely!

But whatever the car I still think 20 minutes is not enough time to do it fully.

Still Nothing from Bristol on My inverted Appeal, Ive been told it can be 10 days or 6 weeks. To be honest Im glad to have this gap before it hits me and I start my defence, as it was stressing me out to say the least.

Dynamo you make an interesting point about your questions to dvsa you mentioned. I should send a message or speak to clarification team stating what happens if a handbrake is freed and working during test but then seizes up after test, I bet they will come back with the same answer, if it worked then they accept they worked correctly at time of test. & I advised the Park Brake anyhow.

May help my defence as the Ve who inspected it states (on phone) in his opinion the handbrake has been seized for a long time, Only issue with that is the car we have found out was tested just 70 miles ago before I tested it and he didn't fail or advise the park brake so it doesn't really back his story that it been seized for a long period of time.

When this letter comes, I am going to go through it forensically. Hopefully with the help of my colleagues, Consultant and Guys on this Forum who have been a great help so far, Really mean that to.

One thing I have started doing since the change to Comp2 is looking up the test history on any old nails I get in for test . It takes seconds , and the previous test advisories list gives you a heads up of things to expect .
