Renault Megane Steering Lock Fault?

I would pass and advise

Most of the above would appear to be irrelevant if it has an immobiliser.

Straight pass from me. As stealth said steering locks are becoming irrelevant nowadays.

Which is why they ask questions on these forums, so quoting the book isn't going to help them if they've all ready read and not understood it. Also, as you well know the manual is worded in such a way that it's easy to misunderstand it.



That's not exactly reated to what was asked. I'm sure that particular (mis)function of the steering lock was fully checked in nt's scenario.

We can't make "what if" assumptions while conducting a test.

I ended up failing the vehicle.

Yes, it has an engine immobiliser, but the steering lock is NOT MISSING or INOPERATIVE. It is present, and operating in a defective manner.

RfR 4b Steering lock mechanism fails to engage.



The customer returned this morning with the system functioning correctly. It turned out the steering lock housing bolts were loose.

All very true, but unfortunately we apply "at the time of test" only. Meaning all future events are rarely testable.

We don't often apply the what if question, we use the what has question instead. We test in the Present only in the norm.

Could well become part of the test eventually though.

Simply;
1. look to see if the lock is present
2. check it's operational
3. start the engine a turn left & right
4. if the lock inadvertently engages Fail at this stage
5. if it is operational and engages when the key is removed (if appropriate) and does NOT lock when turning the wheel left & right with the engine running, then it's a Pass at this stage
6. if it's not as listed in point 5. with the exception of an inadvertent lock, we check to see if the key is an immobilised type or not, or to see if an alternate type of immobiliser has been fitted which either acts on the steering, brakes or the transmission
5. if any of point 6. apply Pass & Advise on the steering Lock
