Help and advice please

Hi Guys,
I am new to all of this but basically I was looking for a second job so decided to try and become an MOT tester.
Because I am self taught ( I am 53 and have been messing about with cars and bike nearly all my life) I had to sit an assessment which I passed with flying colours.
I then did the 3 day mot testers course back in September of last year and in October had my practical on site assessment. Not having worked in a garage before I sort of expected this to happen. I was quite put out however when one of the items he failed me on was for leaving the seat belts plugged in after checking them. This we were told to do on the course so as to remind yourself they had been done. Another thing he pulled me on was whilst doing the headlight aim I lined the machine up and then used the laser to get the right height. However because I didn't get me eye level in line with the side of the beam tester to look down the side of the car he failed me on it. Again I followed what we were told to do on the course.
What is any elses opinion on this. Should he fail me on items that were carried out in a manner that was taught on the course.
There seems to be a lack in communication somewhere and to be honest I havn't yet taken another practical assessment because of this.
