Was it not VI back in the day that said to be an mot tester you don't need to be a trained/qualified mechanic, we'll walk a person round the job and show them how its done? I have a boss who comes from the same background, and we have senior staff in DVSA today that still think people in the trade now are mechanics!

In your replies quoting introductions, panel van not passenger car, etc, you have pointedly ignored others telling you the side sliding doors would have to open to give you access to the door pillars where you are likely to find seat belt mountings and will have to FULLY inspect the prescribed areas for these. Those prescribed areas must be inspected on any of the vehicle classes mentioned so far, including panel vans. I know you will be able to see almost all the pillar with the door closed, but I don't think inspecting almost everything is something we should support, and I can't see that you actually would agree that it is.

Hi Stealth, I've been away house renovating, then the seasonal festivities came, and a short break in the Dale's and time just flies.

All the comments are interesting and varied. I put my hand up when I am incorrect or misunderstood, and the phrase / terminology / words, I quoted, " Opening and Closing of the Load Doors is not part of the test". Is the incorrect phrase / terminology / words, it should have been "REQUIREMENT" . The Requirement for a Goods Panel Van is, "Load space doors must be able to be secured in the closed position". This is not the same as for, Cars / CDV / Passenger Vehicles, whose Requirements are, "Driver and passenger doors must open from the outside using the relevant control" and "Driver and front passenger doors must also open from the inside using the relevant control". The Inspection Manual is for several classes = 3,4,5,7, you the tester are required to read the appropriate section for the class of vehicle you have logged on to test, the vehicle under discussion is a Goods Panel Van not a Car / CDV or Passenger Vehicle, why do commentators quote how to fail this Goods Panel Van with sections from Cars / CDV or Passenger Vehicles, the manual is all mashed up for the four classes its upto the tester to apply the correct RfR. And then there's the drama artist  , seriously read all the posts ( I'm not going to copy & paste times to short ). I never meant that you do not open Load Doors to have a bloody look. If there are problems preventing a full examination, fail the vehicle with the correct section on Goods Panel Van, that's what the presenter requires to know, to get the vehicle repaired and returned for retest.

thanks for the drama queen,i like that!i also don't intend to dig back thru all the posts I will only address this one.i didn't say there was a reqmnt for the doors to operate only that if they didn't and this resulted in you being unable to access testable items/areas then this is not a fail,its an ABANDON.that goes for everything that we test,van/car?irrelevant,ALL of them!yup its inconvenient/annoying particularly to the punter whos now gotta get tested all over again but thems the rules.this is why most guys don't give a fook(and I see plenty not bothering also) because it makes hassle and costs time but the ministry sure wont give a toss about any of that.we used to have items not tested and while the ministry didn't want you using it and it was a bit of a stretch you could at least tick it as a fail but that went a few years back now.can I see your and raise you a  !
