You can quite often read the milage on a dash like that with a torch.

And I suppose I'll have to get a speedo cable made up for the kitcar now.

No need for a torch where the odometer is illuminated but display damaged.

OK will do, on Peugeot's its very common and probably the easiest to read in that condition.

LCD's don't burn out dave its liquid crystal and illuminated from behind with a small electric charge that configures the cells to produce characters.

Illuminating it from the front has a similar effect as the characters are still positively charged and still formed they just aren't illuminated.

Me too as did Simon, the advice given to you was use a torch dude.

Iveco Daily in today. First UK MOT (Irish registration) so wont show up on previous mileages. Impossible to read with inspection light, without, dash illuminated and not.

That's exactly what I was getting at in my thread, it does not matter whether a pencil torch is used or not, if the digital display shows incorrect/partial characters then they can't be read correctly.
